A big load of improvements
This welcome mid-cycle update of the Holden Colorado offers changes that are more than just skin deep
IN A STROKE OF BRILLIANCE, Holden has
fixed nearly everything that was wrong with
the Colorado, unveiling a competent, modern
and satisfying update to its workhorse ute.
The major mid-cycle revision includes
improvements to the transmission, more
safety technologies, a completely overhauled
interior and a long list of genuine accessories.
While the Colorado’s vital statistics stay
the same or similar, plenty of work was done
to the engine and transmission to improve
refinement and fuel economy. Still able to
produce 147kW and 500Nm in auto form,
the 2.8 -litre diesel engine should now use
just 8.6L/100km with the six-speed auto
transmission and even less with the six-
speed manual. That’s down from 9.1L/100km.
A principle used in the world’s second
tallest building, the Taipei 101, inspired
changes to the Colorado’s automatic
transmission. The building houses a giant
pendulum between floors 88 and 92, which
counteracts sway caused by strong winds.
Similar ‘pendulums’ – although much smaller
– are fitted to the torque converter of the
Colorado’s auto transmission to balance out
vibrations and harshness.
As a result, Holden is able to lock the
torque converter more often and improve
throttle response, cabin noise, fuel economy
and towing ability (up to 3500kg). The latter
is especially welcome because, despite its
ample power and torque, the previous auto
never seemed at home pulling a heavy load.
Small changes have been made to the
suspension and chassis, including a revision
of the front and rear spring rates and a move
to digressive shock absorbers (low damping
at high suspension speeds, high damping at
low suspension speeds). Improvements were
also made to the body mounts, meaning
enhanced comfort in the cabin.
All variants have a five-star ANCAP rating
and include seven airbags, front and rear
seatbelt reminders and structural upgrades
to the roof and elsewhere. Rear parking
assistance and a reversing camera are
standard on crew cabs, while top spec LTZ
and Z71 models also come with front parking
assist, forward collision alert, lane departure
warning and tyre pressure monitoring.
The range of genuine accessories is now
the longest list a Holden has ever had and
includes a wider choice of front bars,
underbody protection kits, side steps, a rear
step and sports bars. The list also features
an LED light bar and HID driving lights.
Move inside and the interior design has
finally caught up to its contemporaries.
Gone is the single ugly dial for climate
control and the dated looking dash and
console. It has been replaced with something
far more car-like and functional. All models
feature a colour touchscreen with Apple
CarPlay or Android Auto, and the screen size
increases in the more expensive models.
With such a comprehensive update, it’s no
surprise the Colorado’s on-road and off-road
performance has improved. The steering is
now lighter across the range of conditions
and is responsive, right from the centre of its
turn. Throttle response has also improved
and gear changes in the auto are far better.
We drove with loads ranging from nothing
to 500kg in the tray (plus two passengers)
and, while the ride is never terrible, it’s far
harsher without anything over the rear axle.
With 500kg in the tray, it’s almost sublime.
In fact, ‘almost sublime’ sums up this
latest Colorado perfectly. – Brendan Batty
