Home' Open Road NSW Central Coast and Hunter : OR0517 Contents THE NSW GOVERNMENT’S
announcement of $77 million in planning
money for the Western Harbour Tunnel
and Spit Bridge Tunnel will start the long-
awaited process of delivering relief to
suffering motorists and bus commuters
on the Northern Beaches and is a
significant victory for the NRMA.
The NRMA has long called for a solution
to the worsening congestion crippling the
Northern Beaches and Lower North
Shore and favours a tunnel to remove
traffic from the 60-year-old Spit Bridge.
An NRMA Travel Times report found
that average speeds along Pittwater Road
deteriorated by an alarming 10 per cent in
just five years, highlighting the growing
need for improved roads and public
transport infrastructure to the area.
NRMA Director Tim Trumper says the
$3 billion project will bypass 21 sets of
lights and free up one of Sydney’s most
congested regions. “ NRMA Members
on the Northern Beaches need this
tunnel, local businesses on the Northern
Beaches need this tunnel, bus
commuters need this tunnel, and Sydney
needs this tunnel if it’s ever to reach its
potential as a truly world class city,”
Mr Trumper says.
“ The endless delays experienced daily
by residents along the Northern Beaches
is simply unacceptable and the
congestion affects motorists and public
transport users equally, because
everyone uses the Spit Bridge.”
While announcing the project, NSW
Premier Gladys Berejiklian reaffirmed
that the Government is committed to
delivering the important project, saying,
“ We have been working for over two
years to bring this project to reality and
today the NSW Government has taken a
big step towards delivering it.”
While the NRMA welcomes the
announcement, it has called on the NSW
Government to begin construction on the
Northern Beaches Tunnel as quickly as
possible, with the aim of fast-tracking the
2019 timeline to begin construction.

NEW CARS ALSO BREAK DOWN
While the latest model cars can often seem infallible, new NRMA roadside
assistance data shows that no matter how old your car is or where you drive it,
it still pays to belong.
An analysis of cars the NRMA helped get moving over the past 12 months
shows that cars aged between four and 15 years make up the bulk of calls. Cars
that are 12 years old accounted for the greatest number of calls, with almost
50,000 breakdowns, but more than 14,000 cars manufactured in 2016 also
required roadside assistance. The greater number of breakdowns occurred in
Port Macquarie, Blacktown, Sydney’s CBD, Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills.
“Just because you’ve got a shiny new car doesn’t mean you might not forget
to turn off your lights overnight, encounter a flat tyre or accidentally lock your
keys in your car,” says NRMA Director Coral Taylor.
