Home' Open Road NSW Central Coast and Hunter : OR0118 Contents LAUNCHED HERE in early 2017, Audi’s
Q2 signalled a different direction for the
brand. The Q2 was the first ‘even
numbered’ Q SUV to reach our shores
and, with potentially more to come, Audi
wants the ‘even’ Qs to be urban, edgy,
contemporary and customisable.
A third engine option has only just
been introduced and, mechanically, the
Q2 has many similarities to the Q3, but
differs largely in design with shorter
overhangs, a higher waistline and a
coupé’s descending roofline. A new
polygonal single-frame grille and the
option of contrasting wheel arch moulds
add to its uniqueness and, parked next
to the Q3’s traditional wagon silhouette,
the Q2’s differences are obvious. It also
sits on Audi’s latest platform, while the
Q3 was built on an earlier series.
The 140kW 2.0TFSI quattro AWD
brings the number of engine options to
three: the entry-level 1.4TFSI FWD
(110kW/250Nm) for $41,800, the 2.0TDI
quattro sport for $49,100 and the new
2.0TFSI quattro sport for $48,500. The
latter can sprint to 100km/h in 6.5
seconds and tweaks to the engine’s
combustion process have improved
consumption to a claimed 6.5L/100km.
The engine is matched to a seven-
speed dual clutch transmission with
wider spaced ratios. Under most driving
conditions, the quattro AWD system
delivers power through the front wheels
to minimise fuel consumption, but when
wheel slip is detected it can deliver a
50/50 front and rear split.
On-road, the Q2 feels more like the A3
than the Q3; in other words, more like a
car than an SUV. We drove the 2.0TFSI
with optional 19-inch tyres and rims,
which add sharpness to the package
without compromising ride quality.
The steering is responsive and
precise, and on winding backroads the
suspension soaks up all but the harshest
of potholes, while remaining composed
with minimal pitch or body roll.
The Q2 also fulfils the SUV brief,
with excellent driver visibility and a
355-litre luggage compartment (up to
1050 litres with the rear seats folded
down). All seats provide excellent levels
of comfort and its overall feel is
certainly that of a more stylish and
urban-centric SUV. – Tim Pomroy
Pros: Performance; practicality; style
Cons: Basic items, such as a cargo
net, are optional extras

AFTER LISTENING to customer feedback on the award-
winning Sorento, Kia decided there was room to make a good
package even better. A Sport variant has been added to the 2WD
line-up and replaces the Platinum in the AWD range.
There have been minor cosmetic upgrades inside and out;
the most notable being a larger eight-inch infotainment screen
and new-design alloy wheels across the range.
However, the biggest changes have occurred under the
bonnet, with a 3.5 -litre petrol engine replacing the existing 3.3 -
litre unit. Known as the Lambda II, it’s almost the same as the
3.3, but has a longer stroke. The engine now develops 206kW
and 336Nm (up 7kW and 18Nm). Fuel consumption is up, too,
but only by 0.1L to 10L/100km. The engine is matched to Kia’s
new eight-speed auto, which debuted in the Kia Stinger.
The 2.2-litre turbo-diesel’s output remains at 147kW and
441Nm but the new eight–speed auto delivers a 0.6L drop in
fuel thirst to 7.2L/100km.
Diesel versions also gain a
torque distribution display,
showing power delivery to
each wheel in real-time.
The new powertrain is
more refined under
acceleration and the transmission changes without fuss.
Kia’s local suspension gurus have re-engineered the
suspension to improve ride comfort and compliance over rough
roads. Rear rubber suspension mounts have been changed and
the springs, dampers and roll bars have been revised. A new
steering rack with a faster response was also fitted.
Ride, handling and performance were already accomplished
in the Sorento, so it’s surprising how much the small changes
have altered its character. The power steering rack seems better
integrated and, combined with the revised suspension, gives a
much more connected feel over a broader range of road
conditions. – Tim Pomroy
Pros: Smoother drivetrain; improved handling; comfortable ride
Cons: Petrol engine remains quite thirsty

“What a great phone. I can see the keypad and
screen, so clearly I no longer have to reach for my
glasses when I make a call. The big buttons make it
so much easier to dial a number with my arthritic
fingers, and I’ve even used the SOS button once
when I slipped on the ice last winter”
Mrs Patricia Glenson
“The EasyPhone should be awarded Gadget of the
Year for the over 50s. It’s so simple to use. I
normally need my son to show me what to do but
not with this phone. The SOS is so handy – I’ve
never had to use it in an emergency, but I call my
son every day, so it’s easy to just press the button
and talk” Mrs Emily Jones
“...great phone, no-nonsense, fantastic battery life,
easy to press buttons, easy to see screen and I even
listen to my favourite talk show or the cricket when
I’m on the bus or out and about” Graham Burgess
