It’s good to see the NRMA is pro public
transport in 2018 (with the Fast Ferry
acquisition) and has changed its
attitude from that of the NRMA in the
1950s. Older readers will remember
the NRMA was one of the campaigners
against tram services at the time in
Sydney. The tram lines that were ripped
up on George Street in 1958 are now
being re-laid. We look forward to riding
on a tram to Circular Quay to catch an
NRMA Fast Ferry.

I very much liked the story about the
Fast Ferry. But, while talking about the
use of waterways for transport, why not
tackle the problem of thousands of
people converging on the CBD only for
the majority to disappear into large
office blocks? In the age of modern
communication, corporate head offices
do not need to be in the CBD. By moving
work to where the workforce lives,
significant savings can be made on the
provision of transport infrastructure.

The Fast Ferry, on the Circular Quay to
Manly route, is a great service. But how
good would it be if seniors could use
their Opal card on this journey? Better
still would be if loyal NRMA Members of
25 years or more were able to use their
senior Opal cards as a small reward for
long-term loyalty. It would certainly
encourage us older Members to get out
and about more.

Good news! Opal cards can now be used
on Manly Fast Ferry services.
The NRMA has made a wise investment
in Fast Ferries. Perhaps it should
think about an investment in the state’s
most neglected road – the railroad.
Many accidents were experienced this
year on our roads. As a result, families
have faced heartbreak and expensive
medical bills. Sixty years ago, most would
have taken the train to go on holidays.
A tilting diesel train has had
outstanding results in Germany. With a
top speed of 160km/h and able to curve
40 per cent faster on existing tracks,
journey times are around 30 per cent
shorter than conventional trains. This
means from Sydney to Canberra would be
under three hours, and Sydney to Brisbane
would be reduced from 13 to nine hours –
all on our existing winding tracks.
If the NRMA wants to make an
investment in transport that would
result in safer travel and lives being
saved, this would be a good way to go.

WIDE FOOTWEAR CONCERN
I feel compelled to contact you regarding
several recent incidents with elderly
drivers. They involve them accidentally
engaging the accelerator while attempting
to hit the brake, causing the car to drive
into walls or off parking stations. The
results can be serious injury and death.
I have also had this experience
recently when I went to hit the brake in
my driveway. Instead, the extreme width
of my fitted walking shoe overlapped
onto the accelerator, causing the car
to jump forward.
I now use a narrow-soled shoe for
driving [pictured right] with no problems.
Given that other elderly drivers may use
walking shoes for health reasons, I believe
this caution should be well publicised.

I recently drove from Maitland to Sydney
and my trip took 4.5 hours. Without
stopping, this would normally take
only two hours.
I left at 7am in order to avoid morning
traffic, but I was wrong. There were no
delays down the M1 but from Wahroonga
there were continual stoppages through
the motorways and tunnels. Radio
reports advised there were no accidents
and that it was just heavy traffic.
Motorists pay tolls to avoid congestion
or we take other roads. As I was delayed,
I shouldn’t have to pay the tolls.

LOOK BEFORE YOU CROSS
Having just come back from a trip
to the city, I’ve noticed that Sydney
pedestrians are looking at their phones
instead of at the traffic, while blindly
expecting every driver to stop and
allow them cross.
I thought the common courtesy was
that you stopped at the kerb and looked
both ways to judge the flow of traffic,
and then proceeded to cross. Am I that
old fashioned to think this is dreadful?
